Old School tattooing, also known as American Traditional, is one of the oldest and most recognizable styles in the world. Its defining characteristics are immediately recognizable: bold black outlines, a limited color palette of red, yellow, green, and blue, and iconic imagery like eagles, anchors, roses, panthers, and daggers.
Why the bold lines matter
The thick outlines that define Old School work aren't just aesthetic, they're functional. Ink migrates over time, and fine lines blur and lose definition as skin ages. A bold outline holds its shape for decades, keeping the tattoo crisp and readable long after more delicate work has faded into a blur.
The color palette
Traditional tattooing uses a small, deliberate set of colors, not because early artists lacked options, but because these pigments are proven to hold. Bright reds, solid blacks, clean yellows and blues age predictably and remain vibrant for years with proper care.
Why it never goes out of style
Old School imagery is archetypal. Eagles represent freedom. Roses represent love and loss. Panthers represent power. These symbols have carried meaning across cultures for centuries, and they'll continue to do so. A traditional tattoo doesn't follow trends, it predates them.
At Good Way Tattoo Studio, Old School is more than a style, it's a philosophy. We believe in tattooing the right way: bold, clean, and built to last.
