Getting tattooed is only half the process. How you care for your tattoo in the first two weeks determines how it looks for the rest of your life. Here's the complete aftercare routine we recommend at Good Way Tattoo Studio.
The first 24 hours
Your artist will cover your tattoo with a protective film or bandage. Leave it on for at least 2–4 hours, or as long as your artist recommends. When you remove it, wash the tattoo gently with unscented soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry with a clean paper towel, never rub.
Days 2–7
Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer 2–3 times a day. Less is more, you want to keep the skin hydrated, not suffocated. The tattoo will begin to peel, which is normal. Do not pick or scratch at any peeling skin.
What to avoid
For the first two weeks, avoid direct sun exposure, swimming pools, the sea, and saunas. These environments introduce bacteria and chemicals that can damage a healing tattoo and cause ink to lift unevenly.
Long-term care
Once healed, always apply SPF 50 sunscreen before sun exposure. UV light is the number one cause of tattoo fading over time. A well-protected tattoo can look fresh for decades.
When to contact your artist
If you notice excessive redness, swelling, or discharge after the first 48 hours, contact your artist or a medical professional. Infections are rare but possible, and catching them early is important.
