One of the most common mistakes people make when getting tattooed is choosing an artist based on availability or price rather than style match. Every tattoo artist has a specialty, and getting the right artist for your idea makes all the difference between a good tattoo and a great one.
Look at their portfolio, not just their highlights
Social media shows an artist's best work. Ask to see their full portfolio, including healed results. A healed tattoo tells you far more about an artist's technical ability than a fresh one photographed under perfect lighting.
Match the style, not just the image
If you want a realist portrait, go to a realist artist. If you want Old School flash, go to a traditional artist. Asking a fine-line specialist to do a bold traditional piece, or vice versa, puts both of you in a difficult position. Great artists know their lane and do their best work there.
Have a real consultation
A good artist will ask questions before agreeing to tattoo you. They'll want to know placement, size, your skin tone, and how the piece fits into any existing work. If an artist never asks questions and jumps straight to booking, that's a red flag.
Trust the process
Once you've chosen your artist, trust their judgment on composition and sizing. They've done this hundreds of times. A tattoo that looks perfect on paper can translate very differently on skin, your artist knows how to make it work for the long term.
